World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) is officially celebrated on September 18; however, the monitoring window was extended for the first time in 2009 from March 22 (World Water Day) until December 31. Many California watershed groups and citizen monitors hold monitoring events in October to celebrate WWMD and highlight the Clean Water Act’s anniversary. California has consistently been leader nationwide for the number of WWMD sites monitored and the number of WWMD participants. Last year the Clean Water Team even won the Oasis award. Let’s continue to celebrate our watershed’s and our efforts to protect and restore them.

Anyone can participate. You can use the WWMD test kit or you may use our own monitoring equipment. The WWMD kit was designed to be accurate, yet accessible, technology for all levels of experience, but you can participate using your own monitoring equipment.

WWMD and Outpost Central are pleased to announce the launch of a new data mapping feature on the program website
<http://wwmd.wsol.net/outpost/map.aspx>. The map uses the latitude and longitude coordinates entered by participants to pinpoint those sites.

Clicking on a site reveals its data averages for the current year and
allows the user to compare those averages with national and world
averages. Users are encouraged to upload photographs, video, and
comments from their monitoring experiences via the map.
